History

Since our founding in 2007 as the Innovation and Information Technologies Center, our primary goal has been to realise the vision of an innovation-driven university, one where scientific output translates directly into societal benefit, industrial value, and technological sustainability. In line with this vision, we have undertaken transformative projects that have shaped our university’s research culture across a broad spectrum, ranging from the supercomputer infrastructure utilised in CERN research to solar-powered vehicles (RA25–RA27), green energy initiatives, and rapid-response healthcare technologies. During the COVID-19 pandemic, our Center rapidly mobilised its production and prototyping capabilities to address urgent healthcare needs through the manufacturing of safety face shields and the development of breathing devices, demonstrating our commitment to applying technology for immediate societal impact.

As technology became increasingly multidisciplinary, we recognised that innovation no longer emerges from isolated laboratories. It requires an integrated value chain where disciplinary boundaries dissolve and knowledge flows seamlessly across domains. Consequently, we evolved from a traditional research center into a co-producing and collaborative technology hub, a living ecosystem where academics, students, industry partners, and public institutions work together under one roof. Within this environment, the Center facilitates interdisciplinary activities across artificial intelligence, information technologies, robotics and IoT, transforming innovative ideas into applied technological solutions.

Building on this transformation, since August 2025 we have been operating as the “Artificial Intelligence, Informatics and Innovation Center” within a dedicated complex of approximately 10,000 m². Our diverse teams now function as a single organism, fully integrated with the Faculty of Artificial Intelligence and Informatics, the Faculty of Engineering, and other academic and operational units. This integrated structure further includes key university entities such as UZEBİM/DEBIM, NERITA, SEBAT (Synthetic Biology Research and Technology Center), the Sustainability Office, the Quality and Accreditation Coordinatorship, the Grand Library Archives, Center of Excellence and Özay Günsel Children’s University, all contributing to a multidisciplinary and innovation-oriented environment.

Our facilities span both directly managed laboratories, Production Lab, Project Lab, Robotics Lab, 3D Print Lab, XR Lab, and Media Production Lab, and a broad network of collaborative laboratories, including the Mechanical Engineering Lab, Circuit Theory Systems Lab, Electronic Systems Lab, Physics Lab, Communications Lab, Logic & Medical Device Simulation Lab, Central Computer Labs, Biomaterials & Biosensing Technologies Lab, Medical Instrumentation Showroom, and Synthetic Biology Lab.

Our specialised operational units, Punica, System Administration, Robotics, Operations & Quality, and E-Study Box, further strengthen this integrated framework, enabling seamless coordination among education, research, production, and administration. In addition, the Center plays a leading role in the university’s digital transformation through the development and integration of institutional digital infrastructures and technology driven systems.

Today, our Center is far more than a project office or research facility; it is the technological backbone of the university’s future, a large-scale innovation ecosystem that actively drives digital transformation, accelerates interdisciplinary knowledge production, and builds a sustainable bridge between academia, industry, and society.
